Hi guys

Got a call from the finance company today.

My 12 month old Velar SE has been rejected.

Got to take it back to dealership with V5 and hand it over.

Question now is what next?

Wife still loves the Velar, even although it's had loads of issues. Her thinking is that we get another one and hope it doesn't have issues again. I on the other hand, think we will have issues again, there's just far too many things going wrong with them so it seems. I'm thinking BMW X3 or X4, not saying that BMW don't have issues too but surely can't be as bad as RR.

Hey Bootneck. I was wondering how you were getting on with the process. I'm glad it's sorted for you.

I guess I'd be interested in what the dealer would offer you if there was a deal to be done. You know what to look out for so if you ordered a new one you could give a good going over before accepting.

I test drove the X3 before deciding on the Velar and I enjoyed the drive a lot. Also, in terms of cost (on PCP) it was cheaper to have similar spec items. I didn't like the dash and TFT display (it's a poor offering compared to all the others) and the residue values were low so the chance of having any equity at the end of the finance were limited. Ultimately my head said X3, but my heart chose the Velar.

Go test driving and see what you (and the good lady wife of course) prefer but I won't be too put off the Velar. There are some good ones out there.

Bootneck, happy to hear of your resolution.

I've only had limited experience in a recent model BMW (a 2020 M340i xdrive) and all I can say is to be wary of wireless CarPlay. I rented the bimmer for 10 days, and literally every time I drove, CarPlay would freeze, disconnect and reboot. To make it worse, there's no option for wired CarPlay, and they charge you £85/year for the service. I have an iPhone 11 Pro and was on the latest software at the time. I did some googling when it started happening and found multiple threads on BMW forums about similar experiences, so I know it wasn't just my rental. They may be able to improve stability through updates, but I wouldn't count on it. I loved the car otherwise, but have to say I was more frustrated than happy by the end of the 10 days.

On the velar end, perhaps I'm a lucky one, but I've had mine since Oct '17 as one of the first deliveries, and all my issues (mostly software glitches with screens) were resolved by Feb '18. Getting CarPlay for free was a nice plus last year, and has been 100% stable ever since. If your heart still loves the Velar as your wife does, I'd give it another go and know what to look for in your PDI before signing anything.

Cheers

I've had my Velar for 12 months and other than realignment of some body panels / boot it's Ben reliable. I also own a BMW X4 and it too had some realignment of body panels. ACP works a lot better in the velar whilst in the X4 it drops quite often. Though the Refinement is far superior in the X4 so is the build quality which is noticeably better too. But some how the velar feels that more special and has more presence so swings and roundabouts.

I really struggled when I rejected ours. Audi, BMW, Volvo, Merc, Porsche and VW all were dull and just didn't even touch the Velar. As much as I was reluctant, I went for another Velar.

JLR and the dealer should want to retain you in the brand so should offer you a deal. I was offered a deal with JLR contribution and dealer wiped there margin off and got some servicing thrown in as well (goodwill gesture as they had messed finance up)

My previous Velar was a 2018 car and plague with issues, and we had lost all faith and love for the car. The new 2020 has been far better. Because of the discounts and refunds I was able to go 3 litre diesel HSE, which is worlds apart from the D180 S we had previous. 4 months in and not a single regret for staying within the brand, nothing out there compared, and when you look into the premium suv cars once optioned the Velar isn't over priced one bit.

Good luck in your search.

Hey guys thanks for all the input, full appreciate it

Milky hit the nail on the head for me, thats exactly what I am feeling here, having already looked online at some of the other prestige brand SUV's and I am not seeing anything really that holds a light to the Velar, certainly looks wise and interior.

Milky, you say you went from D180 to 300, do you notice much difference in fuel economy etc, especially short trips, school runs, round the doors etc?

I know no one has a crystal ball and if we did opt for another Velar, maybe we wouldn't have any of the previous issues that have plagued us for the last 12 months, maybe we will who knows, surely couldn't be that unlucky!

Decisions, decisions.

Just had the first service on our D275 SE... 12 months old and 9000 miles ....had some speaker crackle in the first few weeks , registered it with dealership but nothing since?! . Absolutely no faults in the first year of ownership , love the car and the V6 diesel is just stunning .

I'm glad you're one of the lucky ones Kizzy

I unfortunately haven't been so lucky
It does seem to be a bit of a lottery if you get a good one or not which to be honest I really cant fathom out . All i can say is it is a fantastic vehicle when you get a good one, so maybe worth another punt ?..If you can go for a V6 then it takes it to another level again . Apologies if my post came across as a bit gloaty ..that was far from the intent ...it was just to say JLR are capable of making a good vehicle, and they are out there. I wish you all the best in whatever direction you decide to take .

Have had a First Edition for 2 years now and have not had any problems, any small niggles were addressed by my dealer promptly.
I cannot comment on JLR reliability from my own experience (or the accounts from folks on here) because it is not representative.
But I will say the Velar is a very strong contender for a reason.

The new Audi's are brilliant. The Q8 is stunning! Even the new Q5 takes the new design language essence and has stunning interiors.
I am not a fan of Merc and BMW SUVs but there is something about the GLC ....

Best

Hi guys

Ok, been to BMW and no real interest from them to be fair, plus good old Black Death CV19 is causing issues in the supply chain!

Interestingly enough, been back to LR dealership and not particularly great there either. Offered me an F Pace Chequered Flag with loads of bells and whistles as standard but having watched and read some reviews, this doesn't seem to me like a decent option for replacement. Spoke with the dealership about another velar and they're refusing to put me on the same finance deal, meaning I can replace but will be out of pocket! Can't see how that's fair to be honest, would love to hear from anyone who's rejected and what they've been offered from their respective dealers.

Surprised at the JLR dealer. They might change their mind once the pandemic settles and they need sales!

Hi mate, yes I was surprised too!

So basically so far from them, it's either this f pace cheq flag or a spec for spec replacement velar but not on the previous finance deal and I have to lump in 2k!

Couldn't make it up.
I'd reach out to JLR customer service and see what they can do. There must be a deal to be done?! Good luck mate!

@haybird

Agreed mate, that's my next step. Last time I spoke to JLRUK they were harping on about restoring my faith in the badge, so let's see if they're words actually mean something.

I'll be honest, so far looking around, I haven't seen a single SUV that's as good looking as the Velar!

Update

Spoke to JLR Customer Services

Despite previously promising they would help restore faith in the badge, they have now stated that they're not willing to even speak with the dealership, awesome that mind

Aw well, BMW it is then
Well that is disappointing but I totally agree, if I was you I'd take my money elsewhere now. Shame 😢

@haybird

Yes mate, disappointing and disgraceful to be honest, especially after I had all the patter from them about restoring faith in the badge etc etc. All talk.

Dealership want me to pay 2k upfront and an extra 100 a month for the same car I have now spec for spec.

Unbelievable.

Haven't spoke to finance company but can't see what they can do anyway.

#22 ·
Even with interest rates dropping they shouldn't be expecting you to pay the same let alone more for the same spec given your issues. All brands have issues, it's how you deal with them sets you apart from the competition. They have let you down I feel here 😢

@haybird

Took me by surprise mate, just got this impression of "yeh, Velar is more popular now so you can jog on mate"

Already getting offers through Carwow for BMW X3 and Audi Q5.

Don't get me wrong, I've been nice through all of this, very patient, never kicking off and being an idiot but this is what you get in the end. Maybe I should have been a bit more animated as it were.

I have a colleague who's brother in law works for JLR and he was saying that they were offering heavily discounted Velars to employees because that model wasn't selling as well as they expected. Given the current outlook with trade generally you think they want to bite your hand off to do an attractive deal!

drivethedeal.com are offering £7389 off a D180SE which includes a LR contribution of £4,000 towards finance (4.9% APR). Similar amounts will be available on other models. Might be worth contacting them?
