I realise this topic has been done to death over the past 5 years and maybe because I have read so many posts about it this could be the reason, I’m so confused and frustrated. Any help would be much appreciated.
Background
I have a 2017 D300 HSE Velar
My local dealer tells me the software is all up to date, yet I can’t see the option to check which version is installed. They have offered to do a complementary software health check and I am booked in for next month.
I have Apple Carplay (and Android) show up in the connections screen
I have carplay listed in the Incontrol apps (saying connect a device)
I have the connection panel with HDMI, Sim card slot and 2 x USB ports in the centre box.
I have 2 x Apple USB to Lightening cables
I have set the restricted USB option in iPhone settings to on
I have the Apple iPhone 12 pro max phone with the latest software running
I connect the cable to the USB socket and the phone
It recognises the phone and gives the message of connecting to iPhone then after a few seconds I get the message “connection failed, please disconnect the cable and or restart the device"
I have tried restarting the phone, changing cables, changing USB sockets, switching ignition on/off, switching the restricted |USB on/off but cannot get any further.
I have contacted other dealers and LR customer services and got a variety of responses
LR Customer services – sorry sir your Velar is not compatible with carplay
LR Dealer – yes sir you need a software update at a cost of 1hr labour (£172 + VAT)
LR Dealer - We have checked your car and its software is all up to date so you should be able to connect your phone for carplay
LR Specialist – This is a Full Dealer only update and its FOC
I have heard that the dongle Carlinkit is the answer, but they say as a prerequisite it must work with a cable first so wary about spending out £100 for something that might not work.
Help please

Agree re car link it or CarPlay2Air. Will only work once you have CarPlay working with a cable first. The dongle just replaces the cable with a Wi-Fi link

First thing, your car is definitely compatible with Carplay
CS can be idiots sometimes

Have you ruled out the actual usb unit being faulty, Does your phone work ok with usb connection without CarPlay, ie you can play music through usb etc?

I can rule out the USB as I can play music through the USB. It should be carplay compatible as it starts off with the revolving 4 coloured squares saying loading. Surely it wouldn't say that if it wasn't compatible. I have discovered at a different place on the top screen an option that says software update (in a totally different place to where CS and the manual says ) and selecting that it says "software up to date - last update 04/06 2022. While I have tried two cables I'm unsure if Apple supply two different types - one specifically for charging and a different one for everything else. My cables say Apple charging cable - could this be a problem?

Try looking for your Sat Nav map version. It used to be there prior to OTA updates. (Sorry, can't remember where that is)

I've just searched through everywhere I can think of but its nowhere to be found. It's not with the nav map version nor is it with the "legal info"

From memory ACP/AA were released before OTA became available. It’s possible that OTA updates haven’t been enabled on your car, and that’s why it isn’t showing a software version? Do you have a button to check for updates?

seems odd that dealer would say it is up to date, when not showing a version numbe, but then some dealers are better than others!

ACP/AA was a chargeable option when first released, but then became free when JLR decided to stop development of their own apps Interface.

My software version is S21C, which I believe is the current version.

My guess FWIW is that your phone is too new for the software version on your car. Hope your appointment is early next month & you get this sorted.

When you are inside navigation and go to the settings, do you see “App Version” when you scroll down? The original system showed your software version there despite it being strange to locate in the navigation screen only. Also, do you see the software update option in your main settings?

I've looked inside the nav settings and found the software version for maps (and discovered it's out of date but I'll leave that until I sort the vehicle software out) From the top screen I go into Apps and there I have a button for software update. I select that and get the message that the software is up to date as of 04/06/2022 but no version number. I'm booked in for 2nd August so not long to wait

I suggest you try another iphone
Easier said than done. The phone connects easily enough and I was able to transfer all my contacts and phone history. I can even play music through my phone. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for Tuesday in the hope that the dealer can at least explain if not fix

My Velar worked wirelessly with CarPlay when the new OS, I think 3.1?, came out…
Now, I can only get it to connect using a cable to the phone. I am on 3.2.1 - which it says is the latest OS.

I deleted the phone, then attached again, no joy. When I connect with cable, it's OK, but if I then pull cable, it loses connection. So defenitely not wirelessly connecting. Wirelessly connects for Audio, Calls etc.

Audio calls are done through Bluetooth whereas wireless CarPlay is through Wi-Fi that the car creates. You need to try and recreate the Wi-Fi. Hard reset?

Good idea. As I am close to my appointment with the dealer I will ask them how to do that if they can't sort it out. Holding the volume button for 30 secs doesn't work on my car
