I have had this size of plate since 1994 on my Jaguars and now on my Velar. As long as the letters and numerals are of the regulation size and font and are the correct edge distance the dimensions of the plate can be anything large or small.The plates must carry a very small BS number in the right hand bottom corner and the post code of the manufacturer to be legal.
Mine are USA size 12" x 6" which also accommodates A7 RTM which I have on my XK. I have never been questioned by the police about the size of my plates or had an advisory on the XK when MOT d so they must comply with current requirements. Unfortunately though this size of plate can still be read by greed camera van equipment as I had a recent photo taken which led to a speed awareness course!
