I might be making an idiot of myself here but I've only just realised the Land Rover badge in the centre console is a button that opens the third cup holder compartment.
I don't use that one very often but when I did I would just push that back of the cover. I always thought it opens a but roughly!

I had a similar experience with the armrest. Thought they were very stiff to slide until someone on here pointed out that you need to lift the catches before sliding them!
So I doubt you are alone

The centre armrests can be moved forwards to cover the cup holders. You need to lift the catch for opening the armrest before sliding them.

Ah OK. I knew that. I thought he was talking about the cup holder
