Snow chains

Post by chris 1978 » Wed Jan 09, 2019 5:13 pm

Hi All,

Advice please.

Off for a ski holiday to the Alps (Italy) in 2 weeks in my new Range Rover Velar 240D R Dynamic and have been informed I require snow chains.

Had a look at front tyres (255 50 r20 Goodyear eagle F1 all season) and there is not much clearance between the inner tyre wall and suspension arm. Just spoke to a guy about snow chains and he said I should fit them to the rear tyres where there is more clearance.

Just wanted to check this is correct ? Awaiting response from land rover.

Advice much appreciated

Thanks

Chris

Snow chains should only be fitted to the rear wheels

A question out of idle curiosity, I can understand why chains would be fitted on the rear axle if only fitted on one pair of wheels but would it be equally good (or better) to fit to all four wheels (assuming it was possible)?

Per my understanding, on a 4WD car it is best to have chains on all wheels, especially for better traction when braking for which the front wheels do most of the work. The issue as mentioned above is clearance. Per the car's manual the front wheels have restricted clearance so it's recommended to fit chains to the rear tires only. I'm using Super Z-LT chain tire cables (https://www.peerlesschain.com/brands/tr ... s/super-z/) which have a low profile (class S clearance), but haven't tried fitting them on the front tires yet.

Just get some auto socks and chuck them in the boot.
My car is in the alps at the moment and that's all its got and a collapsible shovel of course.
Without going for winter tyres the other and more expensive option is something like Polaire Grip chains.
It is interesting that they say only chains on the rears.
My BMW 3 series X-drive needed the Polaire grip on the front otherwise it wouldn't steer or stop. I had snow socks as a backup for the rear wheels.

Is it still a requirement to carry spare bulk kits in France? If it is, where are you buying them?

Thanks

Yep bulb kit required, got mine of eBay. I got a motorbike one as let's face it your not going to be able to replace anything.
I think Tesco sell them too.
