Massive increase in data usage since 20B/B1

Post by Simonh » Sat Aug 15, 2020 4:34 pm

PSA - Check your data allowances (LR supplied Ubigi SIM) !!

Register your SIM in the Ubigi app or their website to get allowance usage updates.

https://jaguarlandrover.ubigi.com/getting-started/

Since S20B/B1 my car has gone through all its 500MB of allowance and eaten another 200MB in 4 days (Ubigi gave me 200MB on 11th as a good will gesture).

Not once in 12 months of ownership have I ever reached the allowance limit. Car is used less than usual since all the lockdowns etc. too and sits on the drive most of the week.

Checked today after washing our car. Update was ready for download, small file size as has already been said. Installed. All good but can’t see any changes. Suspect it was a bug fix.

Finally got the 20B1 update yesterday and I confirm it’s still crackling.
They might have the worst developers ever...
It’s a real joke on a such expensive car.

Could you check what connected services you have set for Navigation please? Also do you keep track of dat usage using the Ubigi app website? As you may have read, my car seems to gobble data now since the update with no change in settings or usage of the car.

I’ll have a look at the weekend. I think we have most of the connected services switched on except the satellite rendering. I will check and get back to you.

My data sim is a 4gee which I buy every 12 months. I then ditch it when it expires and get another. I can check the data usage on the EE website. I never do but I will try and remember this weekend.

I have read about the issue for some folk on this forum. I’ve never had an issue. The Ubigi app? What’s that?

Arianne, that’s very kind of you, thank you.

Ubigi supply JLR with SIM’s for connected services like Navigation Pro and Live. It comes with the car (well since MY19 at least) and you have 500MB allowance each month free of charge (well after paying 70K for the car).

The app which I’d never bothered with as my data has never run out for the last year, shows actual data usage less SW updates and allows you to buy top ups or monthly subscriptions.

I may just end up buying another Three SIM if this issue can’t be fixed but the sudden increase is irritating as I don’t know why it’s happening.

That’s very kind of you sir! Really appreciate the time you took to do this.

Looks to be setup the same as me (I turned off the Updating Routes for Satellite now though) except for the ‘My Commute’ option which I don’t use.

My data refreshes tomorrow morning so I’ll see how things go.

PS I did have the Updating Routing set to On for Satellite but had never run out of data before. Either it’s a new setting that’s been defaulted to On or it’s now using more data now than before the S20B/B1 updates. Surely it’s the same data though as the Traffic data and re-routing calculations are the same for either view? The roads don’t change. Only downloading image tiles for Satellite view of that option is used when Navigating. Which I don’t.

Two trips today each 19 miles. Only Nav use was the map on the dash (not the main Nav on the touch screen). No guidance was setup and settings set to show traffic at street level only (as above).

Total data was 9MB used. So far it seems much lower than before so hopefully this will continue.

My only theory currently is the setting for Updating Routes for Satellite View is new (since 20B?) or the option defaulted to on as I can’t for the life of me remember setting this before (I’m getting old so who knows!).

If anyone still has 19B, 19C or 20A installed could look at the pictures kindly posted by Arianne above could tell me if they see/don’t see the same options in the Updating Routes options, that would be great.

So the data reset on 23rd Aug. 3 days later not using Nav and turned off the updating routes in satellite view I have 354MB/500MB left.

Driven to Cardiff from Shropshire (200 miles) and then 12 miles today.

If I turn off updating routes (i.e. traffic data) for street level too then what’s the point of Navigation Pro and being connected for live traffic?

Used Apple Maps via CarPlay for the Cardiff trip.

At the rate it’s eating data my allowance will last 10 days worth of driving this month.
