MY 2021 ‘Safety Cameras’

Post by Wivenhoe » Fri Feb 12, 2021 12:12 pm

I have ordered a P400e HSE which is being delivered early May. I noticed on here and in the iGuide that ‘safety cameras’ should be available in the sat nav. Couple of questions :-

Are they available in Pivi Pro on a 2021 car ?

If so, is the database reasonably regularly updated ota and how accurate is it ?

I ask as in my current BMW and previous Merc’s the only way to get camera warnings without having to use a stuck on device, was to run Waze in CarPlay in the background. Both BMW & Mercedes said they closed off the previous facility to have cameras as ‘poi’s’ due to legislation. Hopefully as the Velar is built in the UK there is no legislation banning them. I was told by the BMW dealer that they closed of the function as in France it is illegal to have a device even capable of showing speed cameras never mind being used - not that I will be taking the Velar to France any time soon !

Safety cameras are a feature of the MY21 Velar - the system seems to only be as good as the database it uses to obtain the location of the cameras. I certainly would not rely on it to be 100% accurate, so far I've noticed it misses some of the newer (installed 2nd half of of 2020), although can also, to my surprise, pick up which gantry on a smart motorway has a camera on it.

As with all software produced by JLR nothing works 100% of the time (in my experience) and certainly with Pivi Pro in the Velar, even despite the first software update it still has a fair few issues to be resolved.

Many thanks - I had a load of software problems with my new BMW - my car was one of the first to have the new iDrive system - took 3 reinstalls and 3 months to resolve most of the 'issues' and not all of them are resolved after 17 months. I had read about software 'issues' with JLR software but hope the Pivi Pro have been about long enough for it to be stable when I get my car in May

I find the database of 'safety camera' locations to be reasonably up to date.

It has almost all the fixed camera locations barring any new installations, also may not have positions of the average speed cameras on the new smart highways which i would not try tangling with anyway.

I wouldn't say it is 100% accurate for locations of mobile 'safety cameras'.

Keep the maps updated (not OTA but a download from the nav website and a USB load due to the usual size of the update - around 32GB the last one) and you should be ok.

To add to @Spokenhands advice, I would recommend a 64GB USB stick as (some of) the updates would fit on a 32GB stick but it always crashed for me when downloading.

I’m like you both. I find the camera warnings really useful.
