Newbie - from MY15 Macan S Diesel to MY19 Velar SE D240

Post by VelarDownUnder » Thu Jan 10, 2019 12:04 pm

Hi All,

First time poster to this forum. I took delivery of my Velar last week, and am loving it so far! Having had my Macan S Diesel for almost four years, I was worried that the Velar wouldn't feel special enough, but was I wrong! As soon as I sat in my Velar on collection day I realised what an amazing, bespoke and luxurious vehicle it is!

I ordered my Velar back in May 2018 and struggled with the decision to go SE D240 vs S D300 - in the end, I decided the additional specs of the SE would deliver me more joy than a bigger engine.

After only a week, comparing the Velar to the Macan, I find the Velar to be more 'floaty' on the road, especially on speed humps and around corners - the Macan (with Porsche Adaptive Suspension) felt way 'tighter' in its handling, but then again it should, as Porsche is to sports cars as Range Rover is to luxury. I don't regard the handling of the Velar poor in any way, but it's merely an observation.

Prior to my Macan, I owned an Evoque (MY 12 Dynamic TD4). It's good to be back in a Range Rover!

Very nice. And great pictures

21 or 22 wheels make the cornering very tight, though I wouldn’t recommend them unless you have air suspension, as the ride will be impacted. Mine came with 22”s which drive great, though I soon added 20”s as they better off road.

Great pictures- congratulations. The reason for the floaty ride on the 240 Velar compared to your old Porsche is the air suspension like you say however if you had the d300 which comes with the air suspension then it’s a total different car to the 240 and more comparable with the Porsche - the Velar sticks to road awesomely.

I have driven all three variants d180 , d240 and d300hse has them all for num of weeks and done a good 2000 miles on them.
Hands down d300hse wins.

But It’s all to do with budget and spec I get it-
I personally own the D180r dynamic se - which is fa.- but if I was to buy again defo d300hse.
I was going to get the Porsche Macan- but dealer was a total p.....

Thanks Guys.

@Nick I agree, the D300 is a stunning ride, I took one for a test drive and was amazed at how much more refined the engine was compared to the Macan S Diesel. As I said in my original post, the cost was identical - S D300 or SE 240 - and I was very hesitant about moving away from a six cylinder engine, however I am happy with my choice. I don’t feel like the D240 lets me down.
