Cruise control

Post by KIZZYP » Sun Apr 14, 2019 11:13 am

Only gripe with the Velar so far is that the cruise control seems unable to hold a set speed very well if encounters a downhill gradient . Anybody else have similar issues ??

I'm sure this is normal behaviour.

I've had cruise on my last 3 cars (Audi A6, VW Touareg, Vauxhall Insignia) and none of them regulated downhill speed whilst on cruise control.

Yeah my last car an A8 with speed set at 70 would briefly hit 72 but then quickly pull itself back . The Velar on the same stretch of road (with average speed camera) with the cruise control set to 68 and it reaching 73 before i had to brake to bring it down. Just doesn't seem as effective.

Hey Kizzy, I noticed this just today. Cruise set at 70, reached 75 going downhill before I had to brake.

I had a qashqai half the price of this velar and that could regulate cruise going downhill.

Go figure.

I had an A6 Avant 2.7 Quattro for 3years and unlike my previous Passat and subsequent Tiguan I can assure you it it applied the brakes to slow down going down hills not only could you feel it but you could see the reflection in the tailgate from the high level brake lights.

So not normal behaviour in a higher spec car but perhaps normal for JLR. My Disco Sport was the same as the Velar.

I definitely got the impression with the Audi that the system intervened with the brakes , not so with the Velar which seems to rely on engine management braking and thus not so effective on more pronounced gradients.

From the manual:

In certain conditions, such as a
steep downhill gradient, the
vehicle speed may exceed the set
cruising speed. Driver
intervention may be required as
engine braking is unable to
maintain or reduce the vehicle
speed. Driving at speeds above
the set cruising speed may
infringe on local laws.

So there we have it, it wont use the brakes...
