Engine Advice Please

Post by UKMS » Sat Mar 14, 2020 10:02 pm

Hi all

New to this forum as I’m about to move to a Velar from Discovery 5.

I’m about to order a new R-Dynamic HSE here in Dubai from an incoming shipment.

I have a choice of P300 or P340 both with identical options except the P340 has a 360 camera.

Any advice appreciated from practical experience about these 2 engines ? I should add that fuel consumption isn’t a factor for me, just day to day performance.

I was almost set to move back to an X5 but the RR dealer here offered a blinding deal for my disco as well as discount in the Velar. Quite excited now although have to wait until next month for delivery

Cheers.

We don't get the P340 here in the US, but I think it is essentially a slightly detuned version of the P380. My assumption is that if you are looking for upgradability, the P340 would be the best bet. I chipped my P380 and it's now up to over 410 HP and really performs well.

If you are interested in going this route, check with a chip tuner first to make sure that I'm correct that a P340 can be upgraded like the P380.

You do get the P340 in the US. I have one :-) It is basically a detuned P380 - same engine, just a different map for the HP. The torque is exactly the same... In my view it is a better option than the P300 which is a 4 cylinder vs the 340/380 being a six. Having said that the P300 weighs less so it is all a bit of a wash. Normally i would say drive them both and decide, but if you can;t do that and MPG is not an issue then go with the P340.
I spoke to some of the chip tuners in Germany and they treat the p340 and p380 as the same for chipping.

hope that helps.

p.s. I read a lot of negative comments on the forum and I get they are all real issue; however so far our P340 has done 8500 miles over nearly a year with nearly zero issues. in fact the only 'issue' I have had is that the range to empty i about 50% out. I can't be bothered to have it in the dealer for a day to sort it out... that aside it has been pretty perfect and drives (in S and Dynamic mode) fantastically.

Thanks for the replies ...... good to know.

The other thing I should have mentioned is the price difference of around $10k :)

Wow, I really missed on that one ... I didn't see any P340s at two large dealerships that I visited and made an incorrect assumption. Thanks for correcting me.

I've got a P300 .....I love that engine ....smooth and powerful .....drive it in dynamic and that basically eliminates all turbo lag and acceleration is instantaneous ....I think it's performance are virtually no different to the P340.

Can't comment on P340 ....never driven one.

I'd save the 10 k ...just my opinion

Cheers

If you worry about fuel consumptuon, get the P300. The P340 would be so much better in everything else, plus you can tune it. And the 360 camera is great sometimes anyway (don't get your expectations too high)
