US Turn Signals and DRL

Just curious....

Anyone in the US have their DRL stay on when using the turn signals? Mine completely shut off, but I saw a review from Doug on YouTube. When he signaled, some of the DRL (closest to the grill) remained on when signaling.

Thanks

They used to stay on.
They also used to have an option to animate like every country.
Unfortunately with the software update that happened in December, this seemed to disable all of the fun.

I have thought about this a lot! There must be a way to trick the software to think you're driving in a different country.

I just checked mine and my DRLs perform like Doug's! :D
Details? What software, what region?

I'm in the US, not sure what software version I have, Do you know how I can check?
Make sure you are on the Navigation screen, then press the settings icon on the lower part of the top screen. An option for Navigation Settings will be present. Select it, then go to the About menu option. Find the App Version.

Boo! Looks like a software update won't change the behavior. Perhaps you guys got lucky and the early builds are coded differently. My build date was mid February.

You can check your build date on the same screen as the software version. It's listed as "activation date". Thanks

I'm on 17C (2017C.10-4957) and mine do not stay on when turn signal's on and headlights are off, so doesn't seem like a software thing (couldn't find a setting to toggle either). And I took delivery in early Oct with a late August build, which is pretty early on. Very strange!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow. Haha. I have no idea then! Guess some folks just got lucky!

Odd thing happened this morning.

At a stop light turning left behind a white cargo van I could see the turn signal in the reflection - it was very clear the DRL was off while left signal indicator was on. I could see the orange on/off while the rest stayed off. I could also see the other DRL was on. This totally contradicts my previous post and pictures. What is going on? Some possible reasons for the change:

  • in the picture I posted previously the Velar was in park. Perhaps the DRL performs differently based on transmission setting
  • Today I was in Dynamic driving mode - perhaps the DRL performs differently based on driving mode
  • I was behind a white van today - perhaps the DRL performs differently while following a white van

The mystery continues...

I also have to revise my previous comment on DRL. I tested mine with ignition on but engine off and saw DRL stayed on with turn signal. However, I noted yesterday that whilst driving the DRL does indeed turn off when the turn signal is on. So different behavior depending on whether engine is running or not and car is in motion. I also note the DRL turn off when car is put in park, so transmission setting also matters.

I recall reading there are specific laws dictating exterior light settings in the US which will impact how they behave (this is why, for example, the animated turn signal setting is not available in the US as they don't meet the federal requirements). This probably affects the DRL settings as well.

I've done a bit of research and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the"winking" effect, or activate the animated turn signals. What a shame, they look so great in videos!
Yes I agree with you. Here in Canada, Audi and mustang they both have sequential turn signals here. I wish we have animated turn signal here in Canada. I didn't even know they blocked it until I picked up my car.
