Odd thing happened this morning.

At a stop light turning left behind a white cargo van I could see the turn signal in the reflection - it was very clear the DRL was off while left signal indicator was on. I could see the orange on/off while the rest stayed off. I could also see the other DRL was on. This totally contradicts my previous post and pictures. What is going on? Some possible reasons for the change:

  • in the picture I posted previously the Velar was in park. Perhaps the DRL performs differently based on transmission setting
  • Today I was in Dynamic driving mode - perhaps the DRL performs differently based on driving mode
  • I was behind a white van today - perhaps the DRL performs differently while following a white van

The mystery continues...

I also have to revise my previous comment on DRL. I tested mine with ignition on but engine off and saw DRL stayed on with turn signal. However, I noted yesterday that whilst driving the DRL does indeed turn off when the turn signal is on. So different behavior depending on whether engine is running or not and car is in motion. I also note the DRL turn off when car is put in park, so transmission setting also matters.

I recall reading there are specific laws dictating exterior light settings in the US which will impact how they behave (this is why, for example, the animated turn signal setting is not available in the US as they don't meet the federal requirements). This probably affects the DRL settings as well.

I've done a bit of research and there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the"winking" effect, or activate the animated turn signals. What a shame, they look so great in videos!
Yes I agree with you. Here in Canada, Audi and mustang they both have sequential turn signals here. I wish we have animated turn signal here in Canada. I didn't even know they blocked it until I picked up my car.

No, and I totally want that coolness.

You can however 'fake' the DRL turning off when signalling... just turn on the fog lights if equipped ;) I run like that all day!

Have you tried talking to a dealer as some options can be turned on and off by them and then set by the owner?

anybody able to figure out how to enable animated signal lights in the north american market?
THIs should be able to work for USA as Audi and others cars now do this in the USA right now. They fill up when signaling. THere has got to be a way to enable this somehow or hack it to make it work????

THis is absolutely stupid and I hope it isn't true! I've seen reviews of the velar showing the the turn signal blinking orange with the white DRL still on, which makes sense. I can't stand cars that only blink orange, it looks like they have a burnt out light. The newer grand cherokee's in the USA fixed this problem, and blink orange and alternate with the DRL still staying ON! SO there is no law that this can't be this way in the usa. I'm in the USA and grand cherokee's do it. It's more confusing for other drivers with the DRL turning off as they want to tell you a light is burnt out and distracts them.

We need to find a friend at the dealer to change these things or buy the program to adjust these settings ourself. You can do this for the Mercedes S class if you have a laptop, and about $700.

As referenced earlier in the thread, Audi and others bypass the law requirements by having enough taillight flash (non-animated) at the same time that the animation occurs. Ie. Just below the part that animates, there is a traditional blinker flash that is large enough by law to allow the animation above it. JLR's implementation with the thin taillights doesn't allow for this.

Someone referenced that if you drive with your front fog lights on, your DRL will stay lit while using your turn signal. Haven't tested myself as I've been traveling for a couple weeks, but sounds like it would work.

As for paying off a JLR employee, let us know how that goes! My gut says that JLR has disabled the option at the corporate level for the NA market to avoid the chance. Also keep in mind your state vehicle inspection location may not pass your vehicle if it's non-compliant, though there's definitely inspectors who turn a blind eye (mine doesn't care about my front tints for instance, but I had to track them down after getting rejected by another inspector)

I know that this is an old thread but this might help someone. I was able to use the IID gap tool to set the DRLs to stay on with the turn signals and hazard lights by changing these CCFs:

-MultiCAN-463 DRLBehWhilstDIsAct
from Turn Off to No action

-MultiCAN-465 DRLBehWhHazardsAct
from Turn Off to No action

To basically disable auto stop/start you can set this to enable and it will remember the last setting when you start your vehicle:

-MultiCAN-566 MHLastUserMode
